Maxim Bouchard - Canadian Olympic Diver, a remarkable young man

This exceptional young man almost died in a diving accident, but after years of extremely hard work and dedication, he represented his country, Canada, at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

In 2010, the 10-metre diving board Max was standing on above a pool collapsed. He had multiple severe injuries, a metal plate and 11 screws were needed to repair his broken arm. He needed 40 stitches in his head, back and legs. He was told his arm would probably never have full mobility. To this day, his 20 centimetre thick scar that runs from his shoulder to his elbow is a reminder of the accident, but his determination, passion and commitment saw him push through the pain and the many obstacles. The accident was to help him rediscover his passion for the sport.

I met up with Max, who I am so privileged to call a friend now. A truly lovely, remarkable young man.

Q: Max, Who or what inspired you to become a professional diver

My brother and I saw an add fro McDonalds on TV and it was Annie Pelletier (a Canadian diver who won the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics) who was doing a dive, my brother instantly told my mom he wanted to do this, and as all I wanted to do was be like my older my brother, I said I wanted to do it too! We then both started diving and always looked up to Annie Pelletier.

Q: What is the best thing about your sport

I would say the the best thing about diving is the adrenaline, since my accident in 2010, I have been afraid of heights and afraid of 10m. I always liked the adrenaline rush going through me when finishing a dive and knowing I have overcame the fear of heights and the fear of the dive.

Q: What was the most rewarding part of the Olympic experience

I would have to say it was the pride in representing my country. It was such an honour to be standing on the platform wearing the maple leaf.

Q: Is there a specific moment from the 2016 Rio Olympics that you will never forget

Definitely! It would have the be the opening ceremony, I will always remember walking in the stadium and having tears running down my cheeks as I was so proud of making it to the Olympics.

Q: What is Maxim Bouchard doing now: dreams, passions etc

That's a really good question! I’ve been up to so much recently trying new things discovering new passions. I am really trying to get out of my comfort zone to find out what I want to do next. I am currently working on a few very exciting projects with my partner and I would say to follow our new dogs instagram as we are working on something very exciting! @Bloomoontwins!

What an interesting, courageous man. Thank you Max for being such an inspiration to young people everywhere in pursuit of their dreams. You have clearly demonstrated that anything is possible if you have passion, determination and belief in yourself.
